He is told by Circe - who has turned his crew members into pigs - that he needs to visit blind Tiresias in Hades.
She tells him that he needs to head for the darkness "where a river of fire meets a river of ice". As she says this words I thought... "that sounds like Iceland" - cue a boat landing on what looks like a glacial outwash plain.
I did a quick check to see which film locations were used, and Iceland is there on the list sure enough...

Nolan's Hades is, in fact, a blend of three Icelandic locations: Landeyjahöfn harbour, which connects mainland Iceland with the Westman Islands, the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and the area around Hjörleifshöfði mountain and the Markarfljót river in South Iceland.
In reality, these landscapes are far less foreboding than they appear on screen. But with the right weather — and a little cinematic imagination — Iceland can become almost anywhere.
