Justin Bieber came to Iceland a few years ago and filmed at a plane wreck on a black sand outwash plain to the south of the Solheimajökull glacier. This is the outwash plain which is called Solheimasandur. An area of sands and gravels.
When I first came to Iceland, there was a little pull-in here. There is now a huge new car park - properly surfaced - with space for over 100 cars and a proper stopping point - you'll need to pay.
You will also tend to see vehicles there with large tyres and quad bikes and other options.
These vehicles are there to transfer people and avoid a several mile walk through terrain which has little variation (although the mountains on the return walk are spectactular).
The Justin Bieber video is here. As well as the plane wreck, he also visited Seljalandsfoss.
