Word of the Year: Hraunkæling

For the Icelandic Review, the word of the year is Hraunkæling, which means "lava cooling".

This was used in 1973 of course when Eldfell erupted, but also became important to save the Blue Lagoon and Svartsengi plant from eruptions in November-December.

The Árni Magnússon Institute has selected hraunkæling (“lava-cooling”) as its 2024 word of the year. The term gained prominence after a 40-year-old Icelandic technique was revived to protect infrastructure during recent eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula.

Last year saw a marked increase in activity, with six eruptions in one year.

Various terms emerged, such as

varnargarður (protective barrier),

sprunguhreyfingar (fissure movements), and

kvikusöfnunarsvæði (magma accumulation area).
