Construction is under way on the first large wind farm in Iceland.
This involves taking blades and other equipment on a 100 mile journey from the port of Þorlaskhofn on the south coast, along the road to Hveragerði and beyond. New road junctions have also been created because of the size of the cargo.
Given the strength of the wind in Iceland it's surprising that there isn't more wind power capacity already installed.
- Location: Vaðölduver, South Iceland (near Mount Vaðalda and the Sultartangi/Búrfell hydropower stations), roughly 130 km from Reykjavík.
- Developer: Landsvirkjun.
- Capacity: 120 MW total.
- Turbines: 28 Enercon E-138 EP3 turbines.
- Timeline: The import and transport of turbines completed in early 2026; the wind farm is targeted for full operation between 2026 and 2027.
