Erosion at Reynisfjara

The first Rayburn groups of the 2026 season have been heading out to Iceland and when they get to the black sand beach at Reynisfjara they have experienced a shock.

Severe winter storms have reshaped Reynisfjara and added fresh danger to what was already one of the most dangerous point in any visit with school groups.

Much of the material that was on the beach has been either blown inland - the rock fragments which make up the beach are very coarse, but small in size.

The beach will likely recover but for now the signage and warning lights have been removed, and it is possible to access the beach further to the west.

Large stones which were placed on the beach are being moved by the strong waves and the area changes each day now, and is subject to further erosion.

The sand is slowly coming back, but is still about 2 metres lower than it was before the winter.

Here's a picture that I took a few days ago.
