License Plates

While travelling around Iceland, you will notice there are a range of different designs of car license plates. They are white and made of aluminium. License plates in Iceland are manufactured by inmates at the Island's prisons (if you are staying at Eyrarbakki you will see one of them on the way to your accommodation). I passed it a few days ago on my latest visit to the country. This is a vanity plate (personalised plate) I saw some years ago on an SUV in Reykjavik. Older vehicles may have different formats e.g. commercial vehicles, and some older cars may also have a plate under the other system where the first letter identified where the car was registered. Neighbourhood Map

Thanks to Alda Sigmundsdottir for the tip off to this map site. It classifies neighbourhoods of a number of cities around the world into groups. Here's the map of Reykjavik.

Dec 9: East-West Traverse on Strava Stories

A Strava story telling the story of a great cycling adventure in Iceland. Chris Burkard had the idea. He started by drawing a line on the map as shown below: The next stage was to see whether the route was practical and possible, as the interior of Iceland is difficult to cross. The web link above tells the story, and shares some of the dramatic pictures of the Icelandic landscape which the team were able to take, including drone shots of course.
