Borgarnes

Borgarnes is a small town in Western Iceland. It lies on the Borgarfjörður, or the “City Fjord”.

On the other side of Borgarfjörður, the majestic Hafnarfjall (Harbour Mountain) rises high into the sky.

There are plenty of echoes of the Viking past.

To get there involves a trip on Route 1 (N1), about seventy kilometres north from the centre of Iceland.

It has a population of around 4000 people - similar to Grindavik on the south coast.

The landscape is in some ways more dramatic even than further south with its fjords and mountains.

Borgarnes was mentioned as Digranes in Egils Saga, and the first modern building built there was not until 1857: a canning factory.

It's the home town of Magnús Scheving, creator of Lazy Town. He is planning a theme park experience, which was supposed to open this year.
