It tells the story of a boy and his friend who are working in a fishing crew. They are both avid readers and don't really belong in the crew. They are going to leave having secured a new job, but on their final trip, tragedy strikes. The writing is excellent, conjuring up a suitable atmosphere of the time, and describing the landscape effectively, although this is very much a book about relationships and families.
The day after, I went into another second hand book shop and found the second in the trilogy, which was fortuitous...more on that to come when I read it.
