License Plates

While travelling around Iceland, you will notice there are a range of different designs of car license plates. They are white and made of aluminium.

License plates in Iceland are manufactured by inmates at the Island's prisons (if you are staying at Eyrarbakki you will see one of them on the way to your accommodation). I passed it a few days ago on my latest visit to the country.

This is a vanity plate (personalised plate) I saw some years ago on an SUV in Reykjavik. 

Older vehicles may have different formats e.g. commercial vehicles, and some older cars may also have a plate under the other system where the first letter identified where the car was registered.
