License Plates

While travelling around Iceland, you will notice there are a range of different designs of car license plates. They are white and made of aluminium. License plates in Iceland are manufactured by inmates at the Island's prisons (if you are staying at Eyrarbakki you will see one of them on the way to your accommodation). I passed it a few days ago on my latest visit to the country. This is a vanity plate (personalised plate) I saw some years ago on an SUV in Reykjavik. Older vehicles may have different formats e.g. commercial vehicles, and some older cars may also have a plate under the other system where the first letter identified where the car was registered. Neighbourhood Map

Thanks to Alda Sigmundsdottir for the tip off to this map site. It classifies neighbourhoods of a number of cities around the world into groups. Here's the map of Reykjavik.

Apr 7: Almannavarnir

Almannavarnir is the Icelandic Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management. Civil Protection in Iceland falls under the Ministry of Interior. Civil protection responsibilities at the national level are delegated to the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police (NCIP). The NCIP runs a Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management which is responsible for daily administration of Civil Protection matters, maintains a national co-ordination / command center which can be activated at any time and be in charge of the center in emergency situations. Previously, most people would have visited their website to discover information on physical hazards such as tectonic activity, extreme weather and landslides/floods.
