Hópbilar Coaches

Hópbilar Coaches is one of the coach companies that are used by visitors to Iceland. They have over 100 coaches in their fleet, a growing number offering wheelchair access.

I have also been carried round by Gray Line coaches in the past.

They were the first coach company to join the Iceland Carbon Fund, pledging to offset the carbon used by their bus fleet.

Where are the trees planted I wondered? In Iceland?

The Kolvidur Carbon Fund website has the answer.

Planting has thus far been carried out at Geitasandur in S-Iceland, Úlfljótsvatn in SW-Iceland and near Húsavík in N-Iceland.

It's worth remembering the importance of tourism for many drivers with appropriate qualifications - many of whom may have spent time driving lorries for the other important industries including aluminium smelting.

It's also important to remember that the nature of Iceland means there are lots of journeys (although people might assume the roads are mostly quiet and empty).

Emissions from road transport in Iceland have increased steadily in recent years and amounted to 975 thousand tonnes in 2017.

The number of cars per inhabitant in Iceland is one of the highest in the world. Similarly, the car fleet here is energy intensive.
