Census 2021

Today saw the first of a series of data releases from the Census which was held in Iceland in 2021.

These come from Hagstofa Islands.


The main results are the following:
  • The population in Iceland was 359,122 on the census date of January 1, 2021. 
  • The population increased by 13.8% since the last census in 2011.
  • There was an increase in all parts of the country from 2011 to 2021, the most in Suðurnes (28.2%) and the least in Norðurlandi vestra (0.6%).
  • The percentage of women in the 2021 census was 49.0% compared to 49.9% in 2011.
  • The age composition of the population has changed and the proportion of people aged 67 and over was 13.1% in 2021, compared to 11.0% in 2011.
  • The population in the 2021 census is lower than the population according to the National Register and there is a difference of almost ten thousand people.
