Dec 10: Trex

Once we are able to head to Iceland again, one of the options for students and teachers is to use the services of Trex.

Trex's work has involved Tony Escritt for many years. Tony has a tremendous wealth of knowledge about the country and its geography and has shared it on numerous occasions over the years.

A retired teacher from Harrow School, Tony has 50 years of experience of working and teaching in Iceland and introducing people to the island.

He has exhibited at the GA Conference for many years, offering guidance to those thinking of planning trips to Iceland. This has been a tough year for all those companies that would traditionally have organised trips for thousands of school students to the country.

This itinerary for a study visit led by Tony shows the sort of thing that can be offered (PDF download)

When the Eyjafjallajokull video started erupting back in 2010, Tony headed to Iceland to take pictures and visit the volcano for himself.

The local newspaper reported that:

He first visited the island in the 1960s when writing his geography dissertation at Oxford University, and later set up an agency advising research groups intending to travel to the area.

In this role he has arranged numerous academic visits, acted as an adviser to David Attenborough while filming a documentary and even worked on the opening scene of James Bond film A View to a Kill, which was shot on the island.

Had Covid-19 not arrived, I was due to meet up with Tony in April 2020 to explore some places off the beaten track. Hopefully sometime in 2021 that might happen...

Tony also wrote a guidebook that was published some years ago, and I was able to find a copy for just £3 on Amazon marketplace, It's a very detailed book that moves beyond the usual places.
