Alistair Hamill has been working away on a new GIS resource related to volcanic eruptions, and recently shared some images of the eruption on Heimaey on a Tweet.
It's a reminder of an event I have mentioned on the blog previously, with the eruption of Eldfell threatening the harbour.
Lava curtains coming out of the fissure eruptions on Heimaey, Iceland in 1973. To prevent the lava from from closing off the harbour, sea water was pumped non-stop onto the front of the lava flow to try to solidify it enough to act as a dam against the remaining flow. pic.twitter.com/nV7LtZox61
