Oct 13: Beluga whales

On the 12th and 13th of October I watched the two programmes following an attempt to rehome 2 beluga whales which had been saved from a Russian sea life centre, and were then housed in a similar Chinese location before being sent back to live in the ocean, albeit a section of ocean bordered by nets, but certainly much larger than their previous enclosure.
John Bishop made the film to track the multi-million pound project which involved them in being transported to Heimaey: a journey delayed by bad weather in Iceland.

I was due to visit Heimaey at Easter, and hope to get there at some point in the next couple of years.

From the website:

Guests can visit the sanctuary seasonally from April through October. Every visit helps fund the care for our belugas and puffin rehabilitation (Learn More)

Klettsvik, the large natural bay area, measuring 32,000m² (equivalent to 344,445ft²) and up to 10 metres (equivalent to 30ft) deep, delivers significant space for the belugas to swim, explore and deep dive.

We have space for 10 beluga whales in Klettsvik Bay and we want to see other belugas join Little White and Little Grey at the Sanctuary
Here's some drone footage of the Sanctuary.
