Aug 10: Hallgrimskirkja

A prominent building seen throughout Reykjavik and the surrounding area, located on a raised area which used to have fire beacons lit there.
The church was built between 1945 and 1986, so it is a relatively recent addition to the city's skyline, but certainly one that can be seen from many parts of the city. It has a wonderful design both inside and outside and a beautiful pipe organ.
The statue of explorer Leif Erikson (c.970 – c.1020) by Alexander Stirling Calder in front of the church predates its construction. It was a gift from the United States in honor of the 1930 Althing Millennial Festival, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Iceland's parliament at Þingvellir in 930 AD.
It's a Lutheran church, and the largest in Iceland.
There are wonderful views from the top of the main tower - a short journey in a lift having paid a few krone for your ticket.
