Jul 6: New Year's Forest and Þórsmörk - branching out

A New Year's Forest was planted at the start of the year.

Why was this newsworthy?
Visitors to Iceland will note the relative absence of trees. Driving from Keflavik to Reykjavik, first-time visitors often comment on the lack of vegetation.

This wasn't always the case, and there is evidence of extensive woodlands of birch.

This piece explains some of the reasons for the changes in Icelandic woodlands.
Much of Iceland is made of lava which produces thin soils, too thin to allow tree roots to develop in most cases.

One particular area with trees is ÞÓRSMÖRK
