Jul 4: Hverfjall and Grjotagja Cave

The Wikipedia page has an excellent image of this crater.

It is in the area of Northern Iceland and is a tephra cone or ring volcano.

It is close to Lake Myvatn, east of this popular location, and about five hours from Reykjavik.
Its volcanic explosion crater is a full kilometre wide and about 140 metres deep. It is dark, round, almost symmetrical and utterly captivating. Hverfjall’s walls and deep centre give a beautiful shape, like a stadium or amphitheatre.

I have previously mentioned the links with Game of Thrones and filming locations.

Close to Hverfjall is a cave called Grjotagja Cave

This is the cave where Jon Snow and the wildling Ygritte had a 'romantic episode' there. The cave was actually recreated as a set, and the water is too hot there for them to have bathed as they did in the episode.

Here is a map showing the route.
