Jul 31: Reykjadalur Hot Springs

The Reykjadalur walk is a well known attraction close to the town of Hveragerdi.
Head out of the road NW of the town and at the end of the road you join the track. Head up the valley and you will see the steam quite a way before you get there. It's in an area called Hengill, named after an extinct volcano that is in the area.

I had prepared the route and done a lot of reconaissance as I was due to be leading the walk for the first time back in April although that never happened in the end, and may not for some time yet. I hope to return some time.

The hot springs apparently vary in temperature, and this is a bit more of an al fresco experience, with some caution needed over changing if you are taking students...
Here's a description of the valley with some photos.

Remember that Reykja means "smoky" - relating to steam and hot springs and a dalur is a valley.
The path is fairly easy going, with a few gravelly sections and steep slopes to be wary of. You may also see horse riding tours en route as well as these are offered for visitors.
