Jul 19: Snæfellsjökull National Park

Standing on the seafront in Reykjavik by the statue called Sun Voyager (see the earlier blog post on those) you can see the outline of a peninsula to the north, often snow covered.
Snæfellsjökull National Park is the area around the mountain of the same name.

Snaefell is the mountain that is referred to in Jules Verne's classic 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'. Inside the crater of the mountain is the tunnel where starts the journey to the centre.

You can read the book on Project Gutenberg.

The National Park around the peninsula has just been enlarged which is good news.
