Jun 9: NORÐURLJÓS

NORÐURLJÓS is the Icelandic name for one of the most important attractions for many visitors at certain times of year: the Northern Lights, or aurora borealis. I was fortunate enough to see these on a visit in 2015 with a good show directly over our hotel near Vik. I was the person who popped outside before our evening meal (and earlier when we were told they might appear) to see them in the sky over the hotel. I took some terrible pictures as my camera wasn't ready.
A forecast can be found on the Vedur website, but there are also dedicated websites and apps which give forecasts of the level of activity.
This blog post suggests the best time to see them, but they are a natural phenomenon, and you may have wonderful displays which are hidden by cloud.

This image was taken by my friend (and former bowling team mate) Ian Ward in Iceland in 2016.
Check out the rest of Ian's wonderful images.
