Jun 8: Migration into Iceland (and emigration from it)

In 2016, this piece suggested that fertility rates were too low in Iceland to sustain the population.
This piece from 2018 talks about the long period when immigration was not as easy, and the population was described as homogenous. As late as the mid-1990s, foreigners who acquired Icelandic citizenship were apparently required to adopt an Icelandic name. People have also left Iceland of course to live elsewhere.

For some time, the number of babies per Icelandic woman was below replacement level. There has been some significant migration into the country in recent years, and there are now thousands of migrant residents, around 48 000 at the last count, many of whom live in Scandinavian countries or the USA.
Immigration is paused for the moment of course, but if you would like to move there, you will need to visit the site of the Directorate of Immigration who provide guidance on permits etc. This includes applications for Icelandic Citizenship.

For all the details, you need to go to Statistics Iceland. This site has all the details you will need when exploring Iceland under a series of headings. More on this to come in a future blogpost.
