The main vent in the hot spring area, which erupts regularly is called Strokkur.
It was recently given extra protection on the National Day.

“We’re declaring the Geysir area protected for the benefit of the whole world, because this is one of the world’s best known hot spring areas. We protect it not just for us, but for future generations.”
The aim of the declaration is to encourage the protection of unique geological formations, hot springs, microorganisms and unique vegetation in the area.
