May 26: Hákarl

Hákarl is an Icelandic delicacy which is definitely an acquired taste... and one could perhaps think that it was invented to fool tourists, but does apparently seem to have been consumed by the inhabitants.
It is Greenlandic shark which has been fermented and then often left to hang
The smell is said to be like urine - strong ammonia and the taste isn't much better.

This Atlas Obscura post provides more details.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has actually eaten it who can tell me what it was like.
