May 25 : Lakkris

Liquorice is an important part of Icelandic life. It is something which they share with the Finns, who also love this dark root and its confections. For many years, with import restrictions, this was one of the few 'sweets' that was available and so it gained a dominance over imported chocolate and candies.

It is available in different types and even combined with chocolate. You will find that many of the candies in shops contain it in some form.

As a root, it was easier to grow than any plant which had flowers and needed pollination and was also helpful to reduce congestion which meant it was made into lozenges for sailors and others who may otherwise have suffered in the long winters.
