Apr 22: Earth Day

Today is Earth Day.

There's a special bee game on Google as a Google Doodle to celebrate these vital creatures.

In Iceland there were several planned events as elsewhere in the world. There's a strong environmental focus from many in the country.

Last year, Iceland was also a focus for some of the work of Earth Day, as it had a focus on protected species and was concerned at the continued industry around whaling. A letter was sent to the countries (also including Japan and Norway) that still have an involvement in the activity.

It's worth mentioning that a popular tourist activity for those visiting Iceland is to go whale watching as well, although according to those who've been on the trips it's basically paying to puke.

And it seems that Iceland didn't hunt any whales in 2019 anyway.
Hvalur is the company that usually takes part in the activity and generally hunts fin whales.

Check in to the website to see some messages and other events through the day today. Christiana Figueres and Al Gore will both be worth listening to in particular.
