Mar 8: É is for Él - one of the words for snow...

Él is the Icelandic for "snowfall (or hail) that happens suddenly"
Other colloquial words are used for snow in the same way as the apocryphal list of "100 words" that the Inuit had for snow. The Icelanders have lots of names for particular types of snow, or intensity of snowfall.

This blog post suggests some of the words that are used, although it needs to be checked against others for accuracy.
There has been quite a lot of snow so far this winter, which is reassuring as many parts of Europe have
The generic word for snow is snjór

Remember also that when the snow falls in Reykjavik, some roads and pavements remain clear. This is because they are heated by geothermally heated water being run beneath the surface.

I might have this list of 'snowy words'  from a Facebook post made into a t-shirt
