This is the letter 'eth' (or 'edd')It is an extra character in the Icelandic alphabet and is shown here in upper and lower case versions.
It is pronounced like a soft 'th' in the word 'father'.
However, no word starts with this character.
It can be found within other words, including quite a few place names, but not at the start.
This is the reason why.
Eth is also mentioned in the lyrics of a song by the Canadian band 'Rush', written by the late Neil Peart.
