Mar 28: V is for Vatnajokull National Park

Vatnajökull is a National Park in Iceland. It was established in 2008. It includes the national parks in Skaftafell (est. 1967) and Jökulsárgljúfur (est. 1973) along with the Vatnajökull ice cap itself and extensive areas around it.
The website has a range of maps and guidance for tourists.

In 2018 an application was put in for the Park to join the World Heritage List, and that was approved in 2019.
It joins the 2 other locations which are on the list in Iceland - can you name them?
  • Vatnajökull National Park covers 14% of Iceland’s surface area
  • It’s home to Vatnajökull Glacier, the largest glacier in Europe
  • The park also claims Iceland’s tallest point, Hvannadalshnúkur Peak
  • Ten total volcanoes! Eight volcanoes are subglacial (under the ice) and two are among the most active in Iceland
  • Around 40 outlet glaciers in total and roughly 1.7 billion swimming pools of water make up the entire ice cap

V is also for Vinir Vatnajokuls: the friends of the National Park.
