Oct 10: Coming to the rescue

Icelandic adults are more than ready to volunteer to assist one of the emergency services for a period of time. There are many volunteers, who are trained to help in rescuing people after incidents which may occur as a result of weather, or some other event.

The overall rescue service is called Slysavarnarfélagið Landsbjörg.
Also known as ICE-SAR.

Here they are in action:

There is a good museum which is worth visiting if are driving along the coastal road on the south coast.

I visited in 2010 and had a rather nice meal and a wander around the museum which had equipment used by the rescue services through the years.
It's worth exploring.

I also saw a training session taking place on glacier rescue the last time I was on Solhimajokull glacier.
