Feb 2: Discover the World Education

Following Rayburn Tours, the second tour company to be featured here is Discover the World Education.
They are based in Banstead in Surrey, and have been taking students to Iceland for over 35 years.

They cover other destinations as well of course, but Iceland is their main location.

When I took a group of Y7-9 students from my own school in 2015, we travelled with Discover the World Education and had good service from them. I was talking with a colleague recently about it, and he still had his photos from that trip on that phone to remind him of it - a memorable experience for all.

As part of the support they offer teachers, DtW have worked widely with Simon Ross to produce additional videos (all of which feature in separate blog posts) and other materials, such as the GIS related resource Experience Iceland I shared recently.
They have also asked Jo Coles to write regular blog posts for them, such as this post on improving students' geographical literacy around volcanic terminology. This one comes with accompanying teacher resources at different levels for different groups, which is a welcome touch.

You can also request copies of a series of Classroom Posters, which are A1 size. These will be delivered to your school address if requested, and several of them are of Icelandic locations.

There is a very busy Twitter account which is worth following too.

A few years ago now, they also worked with myself, John Sayers and Helen Leigh to create a special resource called Mission:Explore Iceland - more on that to come in a future blogpost.

Keep an eye out for the Discover the World Education representatives at all the usual geography events such as the GA Conference, where you can go and have a word about a tour which might suit your budget. They have also kindly sponsored the Teachmeet at the GA Conference for several years. Several friends of mine work as Field Study Tutors (FSTs) for Discover the World Education.
