Feb 16: Icelandic Music 3: Sigur Ros

If you asked people to name an Icelandic band... then Sigur Ros would probably be up at the top of the list, or perhaps Björk as a solo artist.

Sigur Ros came to global prominence when their Takk album was released with the single Hoppipolla being used in the trailers for the 2006 BBC Planet Earth series, narrated by David Attenborough. They play extended instrumentals, or vocals in Icelandic and a made up language, often sung in falsetto by Jonsi, lead singer and guitarist (who often plays guitar with a bow).

The band had previously released other albums, and these are all worth seeking out.

I've previously shared an Iceland Spotify playlist, which has a number of Sigur Ros tracks on it.

I have been fortunate to see Sigur Ros play live three times, and also seen Jonsi live as well, and Jonsi and Alex perform their Riceboy Sleeps album at the Barbican with an orchestra last year.
Here's Sigur Ros playing live in Brighton. Their music is rather wonderful and varies from album to album.

The band produced one of my favourite concert DVDs in Heima, where they played a number of intimate venues.
Here's HEIMA and the track Hoppipolla again, but this time played live in Iceland.
