Feb 13: Melting Glaciers

Reclining glaciers signThis is an excellent site, which explores the shrinking glaciers of Iceland in plenty of detail.

There are images, video links and details on all the country's glaciers and ice features.

It's remarkable how quickly the snouts of some of the glaciers in Iceland are receding, and the rates have been measured and recorded for decades. I remember first visiting Solheimajökull ten years ago and having a very short walk from the car park.

The walk in gets longer by the month now, and the glacier guides have to constantly reassess the routes they take as ice melts and access to the glacier surface has to move.

Some useful images for teaching as well, such as this one from the site on the formation of ice from snow, via firn. Plus a chance to learn some Icelandic words for these materials.
Transformation narrow in glacial ice.

The Glacier Guides website suggests the five glaciers you need to see on Iceland and provides some details, and a map, along with videos of some of the jökull which can be visited.
