Feb 10: Ben Hennig - Destination Iceland

This map dates from 2017, and was created by Ben Hennig as part of his Worldmapper project / links with the Geographical Magazine (Ben provides a map for each issue). It visualises the countries from which people travel to reach Iceland as a tourist.

Ben also helped out at a GIS Day I ran in my school some years ago and I worked with him on the LondonMapper Education resources that we got funding from the RGS-IBG to create.

The rise in visitor numbers has been startling and is shown in the graph below:

It would be good to have an updated version for last year's statistics to see how much has changed.

Ben uses a set of statistics to produce gridded cartograms where the world is distorted according to particular numerical values. This one shows the countries from which people travel to visit Iceland. Europe and USA provide the most visitors, but there is growing interest from China and Japan as you can see.

If you want the statistics for yourself, then head for the Tourist board statistics page. This will have its own blog post shortly as it's a useful resource for geographers.

Ben works at the University of Iceland, in Reykjavik.
He has also shared some excellent presentations exploring how Iceland had been mapped (see yesterday's blog post for more old maps of Iceland...)

There's a population map of Reykjavik as well.

Check out one of Ben's early presentations after joining the University.

Just a note that I updated my post from the 4th of Feb to reflect the Oscar success of Hildur Guðnadóttir, the first Icelander to win an Oscar.
