Jan 20: Rayburn Tours

There are several companies who take students to Iceland for their studies, or for adventure.
Each of these companies will help with arranging all aspects of the visit, which could include accommodation, travel, guiding from a field studies tutor or excursions while you are in Iceland.

This blog will feature links to all the main companies that teachers may use to facilitate their trip. It's worth saying that for many schools, my own included, the trip is seen as an experience, rather than being particularly linked to 'work', but that option is also available if you want it, with most providing teaching resources - printed, or available online.

I'm going to start, in no particular order as they say, with Rayburn Tours.

Rayburn Tours are based in Derby, and organise tours to a large and growing number of destinations. They have been around since 1965 and offer trips to a number of destinations, including Iceland of course.

You can run their tours independently, or have the assistance of a Field studies tutor. They offer a range of intineraries and additional options.

Rayburn also offer a range of educational study resources - with activities which can be done ahead of the visit, or during the visits. There are Destination Guides available to the key locations that school groups are likely to visit, and these are tailored to the destinations and itinerary that a particular school or college will opt for when booking their trip.

For Iceland, over 30 full-colour study units are available for all the key locations. These make excellent additional resources.
Sample pages are available to view here.

Rayburn has also put together a suggested kit list. It's important not to forget some key items which will make your visit so much more comfortable. I've known about their work for many years, back to the days of Ian Hardie being the only real field studies tutor, sharing his expertise with many. I remember him reporting back in 2010 from his newly built house, as the volcano erupted behind him. Several friends of mine now work as Field Study Tutors (FSTs) for Rayburn Tours.

Also check out the Rayburn Tours TEACHING RESOURCES available as free downloads from the website.
These include an Iceland Tourism poster (click to download as a PDF)

There is a very busy Twitter account which is worth following too:

Keep an eye out for Rayburn Tours at all the usual geography events such as the GA Conference in April each year, where you can go and have a word about a tour which might suit your budget.

Other providers will be featured in due course, and also mentioned in other blog posts. If you think you deserve to be mentioned here, please get in touch.
