Jan 19: Iceland's Geology - an introduction

A major element of Iceland's landscape and character is the underlying and complex geology of the island. This is going to be the subject of quite a few blog posts across the year, to explain some of the well-known places that people visit.

This will include the tectonic background of places such as Thingvellir, Geysir, Hveragerdi, "the bridge between the continents" and Silfra amongst many others.

A geological map can be downloaded from here. There are several formats and sizes available.

See previous blog post for more on the Icelandic Institute of Natural History and their mapping.
