Jan 18: Icelandic Music - an introduction

Visitors to Iceland will encounter music from the country in various locations.

Some bands will be familiar to many from exposure in TV programmes or advertising, or chart success such as Björk has enjoyed for many years.
This track was perhaps one of the first to introduce people to Icelandic band Sigur Rós.

Some bands sing in Icelandic, others in English.

Sigur Rós sometimes used nonsensical phrases, a "language" the band called Vonlenska or ("Hopelandic").There are many Icelandic bands who remain relatively unknown. I've been lucky to be in Reykjavik during an annual music festival called Air Waves, which was excellent, and is held in early November each year, and heard several bands playing.
I asked geographers in my social media networks to let me know about Icelandic music they were familiar with so that I could create a suitable list, and also queue up some future blog posts introducing visitors to some of these bands, and their connections with the country and its landscape and culture.

Paul Turner had an interesting idea for his trips to the country with students.
Here is a word cloud which contains the names of bands suggested to me following my request on social media. Feel free to suggest others in the comments below, or via social media.

And finally for this post, here's the start of a collaborative playlist which you can add songs to if you would like to.
